In our fast-paced world, energy is often seen as something to maximise, manage, or push through. But what if we reframed our relationship with it? In this podcast, somatic yoga teachers Charlotte and Leonie talk about how rather than constantly striving for productivity or high-energy states, tuning into our actual needs allows us to move with more ease and balance.

Where does our energy come from?

Many of us have grown up with the idea that we should simply "get on with it", regardless of how we feel. This conditioning means we often ignore the subtle cues our bodies give us. However, as we become more aware of our energy and how it fluctuates, we start to recognise the importance of balance - not just within ourselves, but in relation to those around us.

Energy isn’t always a straightforward force we can summon at will. Sometimes, we might feel unsure about where our energy is coming from. Is it naturally available? Or are we in a stress-response state, using adrenaline to push through? When we’re constantly in this mode of ‘doing,’ we may not realise we’re operating from a place of tension rather than true vitality.

Breaking the habit and pushing through

A key shift comes in recognising our energy patterns without judgment. Creating space to check in with ourselves - without the need to achieve or be productive - allows our nervous system to reset. Yet, ignoring these signs has become the norm for many. When we repeatedly override our body’s signals, we risk holding onto stress, which can manifest physically and emotionally.

Often, energy can become locked in the body due to hypervigilance. The constant need to be on alert - to meet deadlines, to fulfil obligations - creates an attachment to the adrenaline-fuelled momentum. Over time, this can make it harder to access states of true rest and neutrality.

Finding a new rhythm

Instead of viewing energy as something to control or maximise, we can begin to see it as something to observe and flow with. Recognising when we need rest, when we are naturally energised, and when we are operating from a stress response allows for a more intuitive way of being.

By dropping beneath the surface of what modern life expects from us - high-energy, fast-paced, constantly ‘on’ - we can begin to cultivate a deeper sense of presence. The more we allow ourselves to tune in rather than push through, the more we access a genuine, sustainable relationship with our energy and wellbeing.
